De Rien means “it is nothing.” This piece is almost literally nothing -- nothing of intrinsic value anyway -- just two pieces of cardboard. Yet when arranged in the “diamond in a square” quilt motif, it becomes beautiful. Maybe cardboard isn’t “nothing.”
