The Imperative Mood

The Imperative Mood is based on a traditional quilt format called “segmented bars.” As I began choosing pieces for this quilt, I came more and more to think of it as a “man” quilt – rex/king, sun/son, Dad’s. And it has some issues with “own”-ing, possessing, controlling. And with “Rave”-ing, or story telling, or bragging.
I see the structure of this quilt as both top- and side-views of a firepit: the black squares are the stones containing the fire; the red squares are the fire, or the embers; the flames at the top are the progeny of the single flame at the bottom.
The Amish quilt I based this piece on, had nothing at the top (where the five yellow flames are), because, of course, on a real quilt that’s where the headboard is. So the topknot flames were added when the piece was nearly complete to give it balance. The “quilting pattern” of smoke and the bottom flame followed logically from the top flames – so the top flames, created the bottom flame? Confusing. Like father-son relationships sometimes are.
