Lilies & Lotus (Flower Garden Pond For Karen)
48”x48”x8”, 2001

Lilies & Lotus is a “friendship quilt” created for my good friend Karen. She especially likes formal gardens and Ian Hamilton’s garden/installations and has a beautiful backyard garden of her own.
Based on the traditional quilt block, “Grandmother’s Flower Garden,” Karen’s quilt becomes the garden pond, replete with a lotus, lilies, and miscellaneous flotsam. The “water” in the pond is from Kokanee beer (Canadian) cans, so I think of the pond as being one in the Pacific Northwest. On the border around the pond is The Snake, which I think further locates the pond in The Garden.
